The sadly obvious truth is that this government will do ANYTHING to avoid a recurrence of the fuel protests. They were more effective, faster than anyone expected or has been officially admitted. More importantly they drove the opinion poll ratings against labour for the first time since 1997. The electorate has been sold on the line that the increases are all the fault of China and India and there is nothing the British Government can do. It is only a matter of time before the clamour for fuel tax decreases picks up volume. Look for it to be granted after Brown takes over from Blair and just before he calls an election. Sadly forward planning, energy policy etc have a very secondary importance compared to getting re-elected and retaining the ministerial cars, houses and index linked pensions.
The threat from private truckers blockading fuel deliveries has been minimised by a law change which allow their trucks to be confiscated. Problem solved.
